MA

Terrorism, Security and Radical Right Extremism

in association with The Centre for Analysis of the Radical Right (CARR), the leading network of scholars and practitioners working on right-wing extremism

APPLY NOW ENQUIRE NOW REGISTER FOR WEBINARS PROGRAMME INFORMATION

Radical right extremism is one of the top security concerns for governments on a global scale, with estimates of a three-fold increase in recent years (Global Terrorism Index). Why did this happen? How are terrorism and security evolving today? How can governments tackle extremism and terrorism as well as local and global insurgency and the challenges these pose?

This new MA in Terrorism, Security and Radical Right Extremism is your opportunity to gain an in-depth and cutting-edge understanding of the various approaches to the study of terrorism, security and radical right extremism, as well as how governments are generating public policy responses to these threats.

“Extreme right wing terrorism…is my fastest growing problem. What I am seeing, particularly in the right-wing terrorism space, is an increase in lots of young people being attracted. We are seeing people as young as 13 starting to talk about committing terrorist acts.”

― Neil Basu
The Met assistant commissioner, Britain’s top counter-terrorism officer

Employability

Career Paths
This degree will enable students to move into roles which require articulate, clear thinking individuals with a grasp of contemporary events, including government, international organisations, international business, non-governmental organisations, social movements, finance, civil society, public affairs and the media, as well as to doctoral research.

If students wish to specialise, the programme is also designed to facilitate career progression in the field of the radical right and of political extremism, such as counter-terrorism.

Career Support
We offer support and advice through our Careers and Internships Office that will assist and guide you in your student choices to make sure you stand out from the crowd when you graduate.

Optional accredited internship

Optional Accredited Internship (London or International)
The Internship Programme at Richmond integrates industry knowledge with real working experience. Students will be challenged to relate course projects to the workplace, make contacts which may prove valuable to their future employment prospects, and gain confidence in their capabilities, creativity and communication skills. Internships are designed to be both demanding and rewarding. The internship will provide an opportunity to better understand the marketplace, using the skills learned on courses in a real-world setting, as students produce an assessed record of their experiences.

A broad education of this kind equips graduates for a wide range of careers internationally, while enabling them to develop specialist expertise in areas of particular interest.

Optional Accredited USA Internship (additional cost)
Students interested in gaining work experience in the USA during their last semester and wishing for help to secure a placement can be linked up to Richmond’s partner GCC (Global Career Center).

This organization will offer students comprehensive career training, find them a placement with a hosting company related to their field of studies in the USA and provide all the necessary support to students with their J1 visa application.

This optional internship will incur an additional cost of $3500 (£2600) which will cover: the J1 visa application, site visit and insurance costs ($1820), GCC’s continuous training as well as finding a placement.

The initial cost to start the coaching and training part of the programme is $1,000 and the rest of the fee is only paid once the internship has been confirmed by the host organisation/company and validated by RAIUL’s International Internship Coordinator.

An official certificate of completion will be awarded to every student having successfully completed the programme.

Visit our Careers & Internships webpage for more details on the Host Organisations and examples of Work projects.

For more information contact our Head of Careers and Internships Cecile Loyen.

Internship opportunities

You will have the choice in the final semester of doing either an internship with a dissertation or an extended research project.

A key benefit of this programme is the potential opportunity to do an internship at some of the UK’s leading counter-extremism governmental agencies, companies and non-governmental organisations – investigating and responding to the radical right extremist threat. It will also include the opportunity to intern at the CARR and – for those pursuing a more journalistic career trajectory – its media partners (Rantt, Open Democracy and Fair Observer).

Potential Internship Partners

  • Human Rights First is a non-profit, non-partisan international human rights organisation with a track record of success in delivering change that has made a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Interns will learn open source research skills and aid the organisation in investigating extremism in the military and veteran communities in the U.S. Interns will learn open source research skills and aid the organisation in investigating extremism in the military and veteran communities in the U.S.
  • The Khalifa-Ihler Institute is a global peace-building organisation working for thriving and inclusive communities. Our key focus rests in the prevention of violence and the celebration of diversity as an integral aspect of thriving communities. Interns have the possibility to work on projects on different topics, such as education in countering hate-speech online and analysis of the global far-right.
  • The Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) brings together the technology industry, government, civil society, and academia to foster collaboration and information-sharing to counter terrorist and violent extremist activity online.
