What are postgraduate tuition fees and what do they cover?

Studying at a UK university means you need to pay a fee for each year of your postgraduate (PG) programme.

The tuition fee covers administration and examination costs, teaching, supervision, lectures, seminars and guest speakers, and membership to the Student Government Association (SGA). If you choose to take an internship for credit, the tuition fee for that will also be covered. However, tuition fees won’t won’t include things like living costs, travel costs, books, subscriptions and similar costs and you should budget for these separately.

Fees quoted relate to study in the semesters indicated and may be subject to inflationary increases in future years.

Scholarships
Generous undergraduate scholarships are available from the University to help fund your undergraduate tuition fees. Visit the Scholarships & Financial Assistance webpage for more information.

Richmond’s Postgraduate University Fees Policy explains how fees are calculated if you study part‑time or pay per credit.

  • Full‑time: 8 US / 40 UK credits per semester or more; you pay the full annual programme fee.

  • Part‑time: Fewer than 8 US / 40 UK credits; tuition is charged per credit, calculated from the annual programme fee divided by the total credits.

  • General living expenses are things like accommodation, food, travel, clothing, wifi and mobile costs, subscriptions and entertainment are typical examples of costs that you will need to pay for outside of your tuition fees.
  • Programme-related costs that are not covered in tuition fees may be things like textbooks, travel for field trips or visits, subscriptions to resources that are not available through the library, software or services.
  • Administrative charges are non‑academic fees (e.g. bank charge fee, library fines, lost ID card, lost key, replacement diploma, transcripts, damage charges) which you may be charged for during your programme in addition to tuition fees.
  • English Language testing, preparation and orientation programmes that are separate to your degree programme or programme of study will be explained to you before you accept your offer.
