Service Learning Students Supporting DKMS
Author: Richmond American University London
Throughout this academic year, our students on the Service Learning course led a handful of impactful initiatives in support of the international non-profit DKMS, combining fundraising with life-saving awareness.
At Chiswick Park Plaza, students organised a “Baking Against Cancer” initiative, raising funds by selling homemade treats to the local community. Their efforts brought together creativity, collaboration, and purpose, engaging the Chiswick Park community in support of a vital global cause.
In addition, students on campus also hosted a stem cell swab registration drive. This initiative focused on raising awareness and encouraging potential donors to join the registry, offering a direct opportunity to help save lives through stem cell donation.
These projects form part of the Service Learning courses, embedded as a core component of the Liberal Arts curriculum at Richmond University. The courses are designed to connect academic study with real-world challenges, enabling students to work collaboratively with external organisations while developing practical, professional skills. The aim is to deepen understanding of global issues while building the leadership skills needed to create positive change.
As part of the course, students engage in live projects and community-based partnerships, gaining valuable insight into the social, cultural, and environmental issues shaping our world. They are encouraged to take ownership of their learning by designing their own service-learning experiences, supported by critical thinking and reflective practice.
These initiatives are clear examples of this in action. Students not only contributed to meaningful causes, but also strengthened their skills in teamwork, leadership, and stakeholder engagement through hands-on experience.
Underpinned by a commitment to justice, equality, diversity, and inclusion, our approach to service learning equips students with the mindset and experience to become thoughtful, responsible leaders. By the time they graduate, our students are ready to engage with communities and contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future.
