What are undergraduate tuition fees and what do they cover?

Studying at a UK university means you need to pay a fee for each year of your undergraduate (UG) programme.

The tuition fee covers administration and examination costs, teaching, supervision, lectures, seminars and guest speakers, and membership to the Student Government Association (SGA). If you choose to take an internship for credit, the tuition fee for that will also be covered. However, tuition fees won’t won’t include things like living costs, travel costs, books, subscriptions and similar costs and you should budget for these separately.

Fees quoted relate to study in the semesters indicated and may be subject to inflationary increases in future years.

The Office of Admissions will review your application and personal information in line with UKCISA guidance, to determine if you should pay UK (Home) tuition fees or International fees. Use the UKCISA free tool to calculate your fee status.

Richmond follows the same broad principles used by other UK universities and refers applicants to UKCISA for detailed criteria.

UK/home fee status is usually where you meet residence and immigration conditions as defined in UK regulations (for example, British or Irish citizen ordinarily resident in the UK for the required period, or certain other protected categories).

International/overseas fee status is usually where you do not meet those UK/home conditions, e.g. you are mainly resident outside the UK/EU or you hold a student visa coming from overseas without the relevant long-term residence history.

  • Programme-related costs that are not covered in tuition fees may be things like textbooks, travel for field trips or visits, subscriptions to resources that are not available through the library, software or services.

  • Administrative charges are non‑academic fees (e.g. bank charge fee, library fines, lost ID card, lost key, replacement diploma, transcripts, damage charges) which you may be charged for during your programme in addition to tuition fees.

  • English Language testing, preparation and orientation programmes that are separate to your degree programme or programme of study will be explained to you before you accept your offer.
