From NYC to London: Gilman Awardee Andrea Heads to Richmond

Richmond University is proud to welcome Andrea Machovec, one of five Pace University students awarded the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for the 2025–26 academic year. Andrea, who is currently pursuing Business Analytics with a minor in Marketing at Pace, will use this scholarship to study abroad with us in London’s vibrant international academic community. 

Andrea faced the application process for Gilman with determination, ultimately earning selection from a national cohort of some 3,500 recipients out of over 17,000 applicants.

“I remember sitting on my bed, in the middle of rewriting the application essays for the third time, and thinking, “Why am I doing this? I’m not going to get it.”” But, she says, even if she hadn’t won, she is glad she persevered. “Don’t be discouraged, even when you think it’s impossible.” 

“Ever since I was little, I’ve loved travelling, and I made a promise to myself that I would study abroad, at least for a semester. I’m so excited to come to the UK.” What is she looking forward to doing in London, I ask? “Going to book shops! They’re very big on books over there,” she answers. Andrea and her Pace peers have a “whole list of places” to go to on the weekends and holidays, including most of continental Europe. “Edinburgh is another big one,” she adds. “And Switzerland, which I’ve been to before and loved it.”

While at Richmond, she will continue her studies in Business Analytics while immersing herself in the UK’s international environment and contributing her voice to our community. This is possible through Richmond’s partnerships, offering a truly transformative educational experience for international students like Andrea, supported by an award-winning International Programmes team. “We are delighted to welcome Andrea and her Pace classmates to Richmond in September 2025,” Maggie Burton, our Global Mobility Officer, tells us. Maggie has been guiding Andrea and many other students to Richmond through our global partners for 6 years. “Pace University has been a long-standing partner for over 9 years; we value their collaboration and the opportunities these international partnerships create for our students.” 

Richmond is excited to welcome Andrea and all our incoming study abroad students this Fall as they begin their London adventure.
