As we celebrated Hangeul Day, an occasion organized by London Sejong Institute (LSI) to honour the invention and proclamation of Hangul, the Korean alphabet, the Richmond campus was thriving with excitement. The occasion provided students and faculty with a wonderful chance to discover about and interact with the rich culture of Korean history.
Every year on October 9th, Hangeul Day is observed to commemorate King Sejong the Great’s remarkable invention of Hangeul in 1443. It consists of 14 basic consonants and 10 basic vowels which can be combined into syllabic blocks. Each block represents a syllable, making it phonetic and relatively easy to learn. Hangul was designed this way to promote literacy among the Korean people and is now the standard writing system.
To celebrate, Students decorated calendars in the Korean tradition, writing inspirational quotes and best wishes for the next year, as the celebration started. This artistic endeavour embodied the spirit of fresh starts by promoting introspection and positivity. Trying real Korean tea and pastries was one of the event’s highlights.
The students were treated to traditional snacks that offered a delicious taste of Korean cuisine. The air was filled with the pleasing scent of tea, fostering a cozy environment where students could bond over their common experiences. This hands-on approach allowed participants to not only enjoy the event but also engage in meaningful learning opportunities.

All things considered, Richmond American University’s Hangeul Day celebration was an amazing reminder of the value of international communication and understanding. We encourage a sense of community and understanding among our varied student body by respecting the Korean language and customs. We look forward to many more celebrations of international cultures that enhance our university experience.
Students at Richmond can join our Korean Culture Society to take part in events like this one. They host Korean cooking classes, language and culture tutorials, film, music and so much more, in partnership with the London Sejong Institute and separately. Everyone with an enthusiasm for Korean culture is welcome to join!
