Intramural Sports

Intramural ßportsThe University’s recreational court located in the front of the Richmond campus, plays host to various intramural activities such as football (soccer) games and basketball competitions.  Teams may be formed in advance or you can simply show up and enjoy the fun!

The University also hires out local gymnasiums throughout Richmond where football (soccer) matches are held. It is free of charge to University students. These activities usually occur during the weekend.

The University will also occasionally compete against other universities in the area. Intramural teams and games are organized through ResLife and Student Activities office. If you have an idea or would like to organize a team, contact your RA or the Activities Office.

On Campus Fitness Suite

Fitness SuiteThe Hill Campus has a 40 square meter fitness centre equipped with Cybex cardio-vascular and weights machines.

The centre is open between 6am and midnight with last entry at 11pm for non-residents. It is open 24 hours for residents*. Students will need a key to access the centre which can be obtained from Security along with the deposit of the student’s ID card. The facility is monitored through CCTV.

*No loud music between 11 pm and 6 am.

Alex Maghakian Gal

Hi there, I’m Alex and I am the Richmond University Sports Assistant.

I am originally Armenian, born in Lebanon, but I have spent my entire life in Barcelona, Spain.

I have been on several Basketball teams and have recently been in the Olympic Wrestling sector, including Greco-Roman Wrestling. I have also been on three different light sailing teams in Spain.

I am here to help you with whatever you need regarding sports in university. If you need sports equipment for a team in uni, if you have doubts about the gym, or if you have any other concerns… I will be happy to help!

Sports in Hyde Park

Hyde Park is one of London’s most spectacular Royal Parks covering over 350 acres. There is something for everyone in Hyde Park including 4000 trees, a lake, meadow and easy access from central London.

Hyde Park offers a range of leisure activities from informal games of frisbee through to boating on The Serpentine and horse riding.

Swimming at the Lido

The Serpentine Lido and Paddling Pool is now open on the weekends throughout May (including May Day Bank Holiday) and seven days a week from the 1st of June to the 12th of September.

Horseback Riding

Hyde Park has a specialist horse riding arena, or manege, as well as two designated routes for horse riding (North Ride and South Ride).

The Manege is at the end of the Sports Field next to the children’s playground. Riding is available to customers and members of local stables, Metropolitan Police and Household Cavalry.

Tennis, Bowls and Putting at the Sports Centre

The Centre is located at the western end of the Sports Field in the park at the junction between West Carriage Drive and South Carriage Drive.

The Centre provides high quality tennis facilities and is accredited by the Lawn Tennis Association. People are encouraged to turn up and play while, for regular players, a range of membership options are available. Coaching courses are run for children and for adults. Tournaments are organised and teams can also play in local tennis leagues.

The bowling green (or an individual rink) is available to individuals, families, groups of friends or established clubs to hire on request and can be pre-booked.

The Centre also has a challenging and well maintained putting course, popular with both groups and families.

This gym has areas to suit all needs, including a power plate for core stability, a squash court for members, a range of cardiovascular and resistance equipment and over 25 classes per week, including Zumba, Yoga and Pilates. The squash court however, does require a small fee for playing with non-members.

Also, the variety of equipment does mean that although some equipment is top of the range, others are quite dated.

Membership includes use of fitness suites, health suite, group fitness classes with over 85 weekly classes including Zumba, Circuit Training and Pilates, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis and private members’ changing facilities. You will be introduced to the facilities by a member of the fitness team and a fitness instructor will provide you with a personal fitness program.


Gyms in Kensington

The Kensington campus does not offer fitness facilities. However, being so centrally located students are spoiled for choices in terms of gyms.

Ethos Energia Gym at Imperial College

Imperial College’s gym boasts a 75-station fitness gym and a 25m deck-level swimming pool. Its exercise studio offerse classes such as commando circuits, power kondi and kil burning kondi. Its facilities also include access to five badminton courts, three squash courts and a climbing wall. You can relax in the sauna, steam room or spa. They also offer sports injury treatments by a licensed physiotherapist.

To register please come to reception at Off-Peak times and bring a completed application form.

BEFORE using the Energia Gym you will have to book an orientation session. This session must be booked at least 24 hours in advance and during busy periods may not be available for a few days or more.

The Emotion Leisure is equipped with everything you need for a full body workout including a range of cardiovascular, resistance and free weight equipment. A wide range of studio classes run through the day for all ages and fitness levels. Emotion offers an 18 meter swimming pool and you can also enjoy teh sauna provided in each changing area or one can relax in the jacuzzi after a hard workout. The steam room will help you to revitalize your body and unwind!


David Lloyd’s

David Lloyd Kensington boasts two open plan gyms fitted with new resistance equipment and free weights. They offer a Boomerang Pilates Studio featuring Stott Pilates V2max reformers. In addition to their gym facilities, they also offer a 20 meter indoor pool and wet spa along with a sauna and steam room for winding down after you’ve had a good workout. Over 100 group classes each week are run throughout five studios.
