The MSc Project Management for Sustainability is a pioneering programme designed for the new era of sustainable development in businesses, charities and NGOs (non-governmental organisations). This master’s programme seamlessly combines the principles of sustainability with the rigour of project management, preparing graduates to lead with a unique blend of environmental awareness and practical management skills.
You will also be offered the opportunity to gain an internationally recognised industry qualification, PRINCE2.7® Foundation and PRINCE2.7® Practitioner.
PRINCE2 is a process-based method for effective project management, and will give you the fundamental skills you need to become a successful project manager. It stands for PRojects IN Controlled Environments, and is used and recognised all over the world.
On this MSc programme you’ll explore the principles and practice of project management and discover the influence of successful project management on any organisation, with a particular emphasis on improving organisational sustainability.
On this programme you’ll gain a thorough introduction to project management practices, giving you key insights into various areas of leadership, communication, stakeholder management, intelligent systems, risk and budget management and conflict management. As the focus of your studies, you’ll also learn about sustainability and sustainable development.
Skills in planning, quality management, risk control and communication are essential to the smooth running of projects whether they are large-scale operational changes in multinationals or the management of smaller NGOs and charities. There is a real need in industry for experienced project managers who understand organisational issues and have the skills to ensure that sustainability is at the forefront of each project.
The programme is designed for full engagement, with a structure that mirrors actual project stages, providing experiential learning from conception to completion.
The skills that you will gain through studying this project management programme are transferable to a wide variety of organisations – healthcare, events, public sector, community groups, information technology, and logistics.
This cross-disciplinary MSc extends the University’s existing Liberal Arts programme at undergraduate level to a master’s programme which blends business and management with social sciences through global sustainable development, incorporating communications and the arts with computer science.
You will be offered the opportunity to gain an internationally recognised industry qualification, PRINCE2.7® Foundation and PRINCE2.7® Practitioner.
You will also gain two degrees, one from the UK and one from the US, creating more opportunities on graduation.
This programme is offered with two options, either:

You will engage in practical exercises, seminars, and group projects that challenge and build your skills. The course structure encourages a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic factors in project management. It’s designed to develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and an appreciation for sustainable practices.
You’ll study key project management themes, including budgets and commercial management, as well as people management, with highly topical subjects such as Intelligent Systems helping to apply your new knowledge in the workplace.
In addition, you will gain the knowledge and tools to help implement projects in a responsible and sustainable way, in order to influence progress within a company or organisation.
You’ll also learn the governance framework of running a project and how to handle the associated risks, with the opportunity to attain the much sought-after PRINCE2® Foundation and PRINCE2.7® Practitioner.
You’ll be taught by a teaching team which combines academic and professional training skills, accompanied by guest speakers from a wide range of industry backgrounds to provide real life experiences.

“As sustainability becomes increasingly important for companies and industries throughout the world, there is a growing need for professionals who are experts in putting sustainability at the forefront of their organisation. This programme will enable students to gain an understanding of contemporary project management theory and practice integrated with sustainability, making them highly employable on graduation.”

“Completing a Master’s in International Relations at Richmond was a rewarding and fulfilling experience for me.
Richmond offers the opportunity to interact with a culturally diverse community. It stimulates discussion within a small classroom setting which in turn leads students to learn, understand, and appreciate different perspectives. In addition, the University’s professor to student ratio promotes a more personalised education with individual attention – a highly valuable asset not only throughout each semester, but especially for dissertation writing purposes.
The International Relations programme at Richmond played a fundamental role in defining my career goals. After graduating, I went on to start a non-profit organisation – Manos Amistosas – that provides educational tools and programmes to impoverished children and adolescents in Colombia, with the goal of reducing rates of violence and unplanned pregnancies in the country.”
“My year at Richmond was challenging and exciting. One thing I treasure the most about my experience at Richmond is the deep connections I was able to build.
Richmond offered me the perfect experience: an international campus with a diverse student body, and the possibility to engage in one-to-one sessions with my professors.
In my opinion, Richmond’s key advantage is the support that all the students receive, from the open day to the day they receive their degree.”
