Richmond partners with TEDI-London to develop inclusive practice for disabled students

We are pleased to share that we are part of a successful bid to the Office for Students (OfS) for a project on disability and assessment.
Run by the OfS, the Equality in Higher Education Innovation Fund is set up to support higher education providers and a range of partners to deliver new and innovative ideas to promote equality of opportunity. The awards totalled £2 million to be distributed to these projects.
Our project lead partner is the Engineering and Design Institute (TEDI) and aims to develop a model of inclusive practice that supports disabled students, enhances their confidence and self-efficacy in assessments, and could reduce reliance on individual adjustments, and create a fairer system for all.
The key objectives of this project include:
- creating a new model to help disabled students achieve greater success
- developing a mechanism to measure student confidence and self-efficacy in assessments
- identifying more students with disabilities or learning needs potentially requiring reasonable adjustments
- producing a report and new resources to contribute to the evidence base on inclusive assessment approaches.
Kelly Coate, our Provost, said “I’m delighted that Richmond is part of this successful bid to the OfS on designing inclusive assessment methods. We have fantastic partners in Independent Higher Education, Norland College, TEDI, and Diversity and Ability (an organisation that supports disabled people). Over the next two years, the project will involve a pilot and evaluation of alternative assessment methods that are more accessible to students with disabilities. If anyone would like more information or would like to get involved, please do contact me.”
