Study Abroad to Stay Abroad: How Richmond Became My Perfect Fit

Richmond was the perfect place to grow and develop academically, personally, and professionally. From studying abroad to staying abroad, how Richmond became my home.

Richmond was the perfect place to grow and develop academically, personally, and professionally. From studying abroad to staying abroad, how Richmond became my home.

Discovering Richmond: A Study Abroad Journey That Led Me Back

During my undergraduate degree programme at Randolph Macon College in the United States, I knew I would study abroad. There was no question of “if.” The questions guiding my study abroad journey began with “when” and “where.” My study abroad advisor introduced me to Richmond, and I thought it would be my ideal university in the perfect city. Every day, I thank her for sharing the university with me.

What stood out to me most was the university’s liberal arts model. I valued and was already accustomed to the liberal arts programme at my home university, and it was rare to find this model outside of the United States. I also wanted to take courses not offered at my home university but would fulfil my communications studies minor requirements.

As a visiting student, I enrolled in courses on fashion marketing, public relations, and advertising, which completely transformed my career aspirations and motivated me to pursue opportunities in the communications sector, specifically public relations.

The instructors, international environment, and myriad career prospects captivated me more each day. Upon discovering the postgraduate programmes offered at Richmond, my world became vibrant. My desire to further my education at the university became increasingly difficult to suppress.

I had such a life-changing experience at Richmond that I wanted to do everything possible to return for my postgraduate studies. I’m so glad that Randolph Macon established a partnership with Richmond, which enabled me to pursue my MA in Advertising and Public Relations at a university in the city I fell in love with.

Post-Grad Priorities: Why Richmond Was My First Choice for a Master’s

My undergraduate degree graduation in May 2024 with a Union Jack stole representing my plan to pursue a MA in Advertising and Public Relations at Richmond.

When it was time to choose a postgraduate programme that was right for me, I knew my decision would profoundly shape my future career. As I researched different programmes, Richmond remained acutely present in my mind. I wanted a university that would academically challenge me. At the same time, I wanted it to also equip me with the practical skills and connections I needed to excel in the competitive fields of advertising and public relations. Richmond ticked every one of these boxes and then some.

The first thing that drew me to Richmond was its dual accreditation. The opportunity to graduate with a UK and US degree permits access to various global career opportunities. As someone who aspires to work internationally, this accreditation reassured me that I’d be earning a qualification that holds merit no matter where my career takes me.

Just as significant were the professional development opportunities available at Richmond. London is one of the global hubs of advertising and PR, and being based here means I have consistent access to inspiration and industry leaders. Richmond enhances this opportunity by providing professional organisation memberships like the PRCA, networking events, workshops, and internships designed to help students grow.

The Beauty of Chiswick Park: A Dance of Peace and Progress

Richmond’s home in the beautiful Chiswick Park.

Location was a significant factor in my selection of a postgraduate programme. I’ve always wanted to study in London because of the city’s vast career and cultural opportunities. At the same time, I wanted to study and live in a picturesque community that still provided me with access to professional development.

Richmond’s Chiswick Park location beautifully intertwines these values, allowing me to experience the balance of peace and progress on its campus. The campus prioritises values that are important to me: cultural diversity, environmental sustainability, and a communalist attitude. Richmond’s London location invited me to experience the best of both worlds: tranquillity and access to opportunity.

A Supportive Learning Community: Finding Home at Richmond

Relocating to a new city—especially one as fast-paced and distant from home as London—can be an overwhelming experience. Upon arriving at Richmond’s campus, I felt a sense of belonging I hadn’t experienced anywhere else. This sense of community made the transition seamless. This sense of camaraderie illustrates that Richmond is more than just a university. It’s a community where students are encouraged to flourish academically, personally, and professionally.

A Decision That Transformed My Future

Looking back, choosing Richmond was one of the most impactful decisions I’ve ever made. What began as a study abroad experience quickly evolved into something more significant, a place where I was academically, professionally, and personally inspired. I found a university that gave me the confidence to achieve my academic and professional ambitions with the support of a diverse and enriching community.

For anyone considering where to study – whether for a semester abroad or a full degree – Richmond is more than a university. It’s where potential is nurtured, perspectives are broadened, and careers are launched. I’m grateful that my study abroad journey didn’t just lead me here – it led me back.
