Richmond American University London’s Art History and Visual Culture (AVC) MA students recently enjoyed a visit to the renowned October Gallery, one of London’s most established art spaces dedicated to global arts. Since the mid-1970s, this pioneering gallery has showcased artists from all five continents, providing a vibrant space for artistic encounter, experimentation, and dialogue.

The October Gallery has played a crucial role in introducing the concept of ‘Transvanguard’, championing artists whose work bridges cosmopolitan influences with distinctive individual aesthetics. Under the visionary leadership of Gallerist Chili Hawes and Curator Eleri Fanshawe, the gallery has cultivated an environment where diverse artistic voices can thrive.

During the visit, our AVC MA students had the unique opportunity to engage directly with both Hawes and Fanshawe, who welcomed them with enthusiasm and generosity. The students explored the gallery’s dynamic exhibitions and gained valuable insights into contemporary global art practices.

This visit was not only an enriching academic experience but also an inspiring chance for students to witness first-hand how the October Gallery continues to shape the discourse on international art.
