During the fall semester, Klaudia, a BA (Hons) Fashion Management & Marketing student, completed an academic internship where she interned as a Visual Merchandising intern at Primark. This opportunity allowed her to expand her current skills and explore potential career paths within the fashion industry. Through this experience, she gained valuable insights into the business and marketing side of fashion, building confidence and real-world understanding of her future career direction. Today, she’s sharing her story and how the academic internship helped her understand and navigate working in a high demand environment.
“Hi! I am Klaudia and I majored in Fashion Marketing and Management. In my last semester at Richmond, I had the opportunity to intern as a Visual Merchandiser at Primark, where my main responsibilities were to keep all in-store and window displays accurate, tidy, and aesthetic. I worked alongside a full-time VM who taught me everything at the beginning so I could be independent and confident later. And that worked out very well, I was really lucky to have her as my kind of mentor.
Overall, the position was mostly about creativity and planning but also about communication with managers. There were style guides we received weekly that gave a general idea on how to display the collections and we made that happen according to the space and stock we had.
During the program I have met some great people and picked up some valuable knowledge about retail and VM. I could also see how a business operates on the daily and got some hands-on experience on things I had learnt at uni.
I am glad I took the opportunity to try myself out in this position, because it helped me see what kind of career path to start on in the future and also got me some work experience for my CV, which is always a plus!😊”
