In the lead up to our 2025 Graduation we talked to Ashton who will be graduating with a BA in Communications: Advertising and PR.
Where did your journey to university begin?
I knew I wanted to study in London, but didn’t know where. I honestly hadn’t heard about Richmond until I saw a video on TikTok about a girl who had just graduated from there and that prompted me to do more research where I ultimately chose Richmond.
Why did you choose Richmond and your degree?
I chose Richmond over other London universities because of the dual US/UK degree which I thought would help me to work virtually wherever I want to. I chose the Communications: Advertising and PR degree specifically because it allowed me to apply myself creatively to my work such as in advertising campaigns.
I also enjoy the liberal arts approach and being able to choose the courses I wanted to take as well as choose the electives that most interested me.
What has your experience been like, in and out of class?
I have loved the small class sizes, because it allows you to get to know your professors. Because of the universities size, you often have professors for more than one course, and this just allows the relationship to develop even further. Most of my professors had professional experience in the field I was studying and were so helpful with giving practical knowledge and resources.
Out of class, I have been able to visit so many countries I never thought I would have the opportunity to just from meeting people from those countries. I have had to opportunity to visit friends in Brazil, Aruba, Italy, and more. Also, being able to travel through Europe so continently has been amazing and such an eye-opening experience. I have absolutely loved being able to further my cultural knowledge.
Being able to be in London during such historical times has led to unique experiences, such as being able to write an article for a major newspaper back home in Atlanta about the Queen’s funeral.
Were you involved in any clubs, societies, student groups or activities outside your course?
I had the opportunity to serve 2 years on the SGA as the PR and Communications Officer, where I gained hands on experience in planning and advertising events.
What are you most proud of from your time here?
I am most proud of being on the SGA and planning and advertising events for students. We were able to increase student turnout by almost double this past year as well as take student feedback to create even better student experiences.
How has Richmond shaped you?
I think Richmond has allowed me to gain a more well-rounded education not only in academic terms but in life as well. Being able to go to such a diverse uni has helped me to better understand people and the cultures they come from.
What’s next for you – career, study, travel or something else?
After graduation this summer, I plan on pursuing a postgraduate degree in Events Management, with a focus on the music industry.
What would you say to someone considering studying here?
Don’t be afraid to move. You can always go back home, but you can only spend your 20s in London once.
