I have been looking forward to the course I finally had the chance to complete this semester, “Introduction to Writing for the Media”. It did not disappoint and turned out to be my favourite class, offering an engaging and thought-provoking curriculum. Topics covered ranged from working on news stories, press releases, and blog writing. The class had interesting workshops, line up of great guest speakers and a trip to the BBC World Service HQ!
As an eager Media student who is chronically online and spends countless hours consuming content through the screen digitally, I have always wondered what it would be like behind the screens. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to experience in-person working behind the scenes.

In the last week of classes, we visited the BBC Headquarters located in Central London. Our esteemed Professor, Audrey Tinline, who is a journalist at the BBC, organized the visit. Upon arrival and after security checks, we were given visitor passes. We had the chance to witness the Live Newsroom, where everyone was busy working behind the scenes. The entire floor was organised into different sections, each undertaking specific tasks that contributed to the final live reporting on the BBC Channel. We also witnessed filmings of reporter’s live reporting and interviews.

As we explored different floors, we observed people working on various BBC country regions. We also saw recording studios that I often recognise from interviews with my favourite celebrities on YouTube. Professor Audrey taught us about the operations of the media in this live setting while providing real time examples. From the ways of crafting headlines, to the ways of directors and editors coordinating behind the scenes of a live reporting, we understood the precision behind every task to be executed.
The trip provided us with a firsthand look at professional media operations. This experience deepened my existing passion for working in the media industry and ignited my desire to be a part of an equally exciting work environment. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have participated in this class taught by Professor Audrey Tinline.
