About
I graduated in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Rome, La Sapienza. After which I moved to the UK to complete an MA in Cultural Studies and History (University of East London), followed by a PhD in Social Anthropology from Goldsmiths College, University of London in 2005. I joined the Richmond team in 2019, after having served as guest lecturer there for a number of years.
Research interests
My work sits at the cross-roads between art, world and global visual cultures, visual anthropology, and curating. I began my career as curator with a touring exhibition at the British Museum (Warriors of the Plains, 2009) Over the years, I have curated exhibitions for the Royal Anthropological Institute (London), the Weltkulturen Museum (Frankfurt), and the Venice Biennale (2019). I regularly collaborate with commercial galleries and museums in EU, UK and the Americas. Additionally, I served as consultant for the Royal Academy of Arts, the American Museum in Bristol, Hastings Museum, the Horniman Museum in London, and the Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts. I am research active and have written two books and edited numerous collections about art and visual culture. My third book will be published in 2025 with the title: Shamans: the Visual Culture of Animism, Ritual, Trance and Intermediate States (Thames and Hudson). My academic research has been published in journals such as World Art, Cadernos de Arte e Antropologia, Time and Mind, Latin American Historical Review, Journal of Ritual Studies, and History and Anthropology, among others. I regularly share my research through conferences, congresses, and conventions.
