On Thursday, 27th March, students from Richmond’s AVC5205 Art in Context course had the privilege of experiencing an exclusive tour at White Cube Gallery. Led by Dr. Piola Massarotto, the visit offered an in-depth look at the gallery’s latest exhibition, Theaster Gates. 1965: Malcolm in Winter: A Translation Exercise.
White Cube Associate Director Soraya Rodriguez provided an insightful and thought-provoking tour, guiding students through Gates’ powerful work, which explores the activation of archives with deep political and social relevance—particularly the Black Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.
Theaster Gates, an American Black artist, is renowned for his multidisciplinary practice, spanning sculpture, installation, performance, urban intervention, and land development. His expertise in pottery, honed through time spent refining his technique in Japan, is just one element of his diverse artistic repertoire. He also incorporates reclaimed materials into his work, transforming them into poignant narratives of history and identity.
Beyond his studio practice, Gates has played a significant role in revitalising areas of Chicago, such as Stony Island, for the benefit of local Black communities. His impact extends internationally, with key exhibitions at Tate Liverpool (2019) and the creation of the Serpentine Pavilion (2022).
Dr Piola Massarotto shared, “We had an incredible time and, thanks to Soraya, left the White Cube Gallery deeply moved and inspired by Gates’ ability to address so many social, political and racial issues through his work.”
