My Journey to Richmond and Media Studies: Finding My Path

Jomana shares her experience and why she chose to study at the Richmond American University London.

Communications: Media Studies student

Hey there! My name is Jomana Aguerouaz, and I’m a second-year student at Richmond American University London, majoring in Media Studies. Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been enchanted by the world of journalism, literature, photography, poetry, film, and media. I remember scribbling poems and stories in my notebooks as a child — something I still do today! My dream has always been to become a journalist, and I’m excited to share why I chose Richmond University, why I’m so passionate about my course, and how my experience has shaped me so far.

Why I Chose Richmond

Choosing a university was a big decision for me, especially since I’m originally from Morocco. Back home, journalism isn’t always viewed with the same importance as fields like medicine or engineering. This made me feel a bit nervous about pursuing something I was so passionate about. When I came across Richmond University, it was like a breath of fresh air.

First off, the location was a big factor. London is one of the most vibrant cities for media and journalism, so I knew it would be an exciting place to study. The idea of being surrounded by endless opportunities, events, and industry professionals really appealed to me. But what really sealed the deal was the university’s open-minded, international atmosphere. At Richmond, I felt like my passion for journalism would be respected and taken seriously, just as much as someone studying engineering or medicine.

During my research and visits, I could see that Richmond truly embraced creativity and individuality. I knew that this was the place where I could not only grow academically but also feel like my voice mattered. For the first time, I felt validated in my choice to study something I love.

Why I Chose Media Studies

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to storytelling. I’ve always wanted to give a voice to stories that need to be told, whether through journalism, photography, or film. So, Media Studies was a perfect fit for me. The course at Richmond is so much more than just learning about the media — it’s about exploring how the stories we tell shape our world.

What I love most about the program is the blend of theory and hands-on experience. From learning the ins and outs of journalism to diving into film analysis and digital media, the course covers all aspects of the media world. The fact that I can explore multiple interests — from writing to visual storytelling — makes it feel so tailored to my passions.

Another big reason I chose this course was the industry connections Richmond offers. The chance to gain real-world experience through internships and placements is a huge plus, especially in a city like London, where media opportunities are everywhere. Knowing that I could start building my career while I study made Richmond’s Media Studies program stand out.

My Experience So Far

Since starting my journey here, I can honestly say it’s been everything I hoped for and more. Every day I walk into class excited, knowing that what I’m learning aligns with my passion. The professors are not only knowledgeable but genuinely supportive, always pushing us to think critically and creatively.

One of the things I love most is the international community at Richmond. I’ve met people from all over the world, and their different perspectives have enriched my understanding of media and global issues. It’s incredible to be part of such a diverse group of students, all of whom bring something unique to the table.

For me, the biggest relief has been feeling like what I love matters. Coming from a background where journalism wasn’t always seen as a “serious” career path, it’s empowering to be in an environment that encourages me to follow my dreams. At Richmond, I feel inspired and motivated every day because I know that what I’m doing can make a real impact.

Advice for Prospective Students

To anyone out there who’s thinking of applying to Richmond University or pursuing Media Studies — go for it! My best advice is to follow what you’re passionate about, even if it’s not the most “traditional” path. Don’t let doubts hold you back. I had my own anxieties about whether my field would be respected or if I was making the right choice, but being here has shown me that every passion is valid.

If you’re like me, and you’ve been dreaming of a career in media or journalism, Richmond is the perfect place to nurture that passion. The supportive environment, combined with endless opportunities in London, will help you grow both personally and professionally. Whatever it is you love, whether it’s storytelling, photography, or filmmaking, know that it has value, and with the right support, you can create a meaningful career.

Good luck, and don’t be afraid to chase your dreams — they matter more than you think!
