Starting postgraduate studies marks a new chapter filled with excitement, new challenges and self-discovery. For Vishal Mina, who is currently studying MSc International Business Management (IBM) at Richmond American University London, the first month has been nothing short of transformative.

In this reflective piece, Vishal shares his personal journey. From arriving in a new academic and cultural environment to the joy of discovering a vibrant, supportive community. His story captures the essence of what it means to begin a postgraduate adventure at Richmond: embracing independence, building confidence and finding belonging in a truly international setting.

Excerpt: “First Month in Academic: A Postgrad View”

A chapter from my diary

Wow, it’s officially been one month since I started my postgraduate journey at Richmond American University in London, and what an intense self-improvement journey this has been! This chapter truly feels like the start of an independent, resilient life, and I’m loving the challenge.

The Leap
As a true extrovert, in my first few days, I felt both nervous and curious. I was determined not to feel “new” or isolated. I immediately pushed past the initial discomfort of being in a new environment and made it my mission to connect with others. I realized adaptation isn’t about waiting for people to come to you; it’s about choosing to engage. It paid off!

The Academic Shift
I never expected studies in the UK to feel so free and joyful, the environment is open, engaging, and makes you genuinely want to learn. Most of my professors are incredibly down-to-earth, supportive, and cheerful.

However, moving to a new country always involves moments of profound reflection. I’ve encountered personal moments that make me feel like an outsider, and it’s a confusing feeling that comes with navigating a new culture. I’m choosing not to let that challenge hold me back. My focus remains purely on my academics, and I give my absolute best to every opportunity.

The Campus Life
I really appreciate having a smaller campus. It means you see familiar faces all the time, which fosters a strong sense of community and provides constant international exposure. I’ve made so many genuine friends and connections from different cultures and backgrounds. This network keeps me motivated and aware of the whole university’s dynamics, it makes navigating everything so much easier!

This week was huge!
I completed my first-ever postgraduate midterm, which, honestly, I enjoyed. I’ve been active with group work, presentations, and discussions in my PG Business program.

And for the most exciting news: I took a chance and participated in the Student SENATE election… and I was successfully elected as the SENATE Representative for my postgraduate course!

Overall, my first month has been fantastic. I’m putting in the work, living an independent life in London, and hoping this amazing start only continues. Here’s to giving my best every day!!

Conclusion

Vishal’s story perfectly captures the spirit of postgraduate life at Richmond. Here, learning extends far beyond the classroom. From embracing new cultures to stepping into leadership roles, every experience contributes to building confidence and a sense of belonging.

Vishal’s journey reminds us that growth often begins the moment we step outside our comfort zone. And that the first month is only the beginning of something extraordinary.
