The art of liberal study

You may have heard that the liberal arts experience is a general education system, but it’s a solar system away from being general. Albert Einstein once said “The value of an education in a liberal arts college is not the learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think something that cannot be learned from textbooks”.

Gaining a broader understanding of the world around us is at the heart of what we strive to accomplish at Richmond University, and we understand that choosing a university is one of the most important decisions you will make. In fact, a liberal arts education at Richmond University will not only encourage you to simultaneously explore a wide range of fascinating subjects and programmes of your choosing, it will also provide you with the tools and flexibility of thought to build important connections across academic areas such as literature, science, mathematics, business and psychology; all while remaining completely relevant and specific to your interests, and your life.

Your degree at Richmond University

A degree at Richmond University takes place over four years, with the first year exploring the core curriculum. You have the flexibility to decide in which area you’d like to specialise later on in the programme (no ‘major’ rush). This flexibility allows you to plan ahead and change your majors and minors when you need – the variety in your studies is up to you, and the combination of major(s) and minor(s) you take determine what you qualify in when you graduate. You’re not in this on your own, dDon’t worry, you’ll have an academic advisor throughout your studies; who will be on-hand to talk about your options so that you can achieve what you want, check out our guide to academic advising.

The liberal arts experience

As you begin your story with us you’ll discover that the interaction between student and professor is a key feature in your studies, but not just in the way you expect. A core feature of a liberal arts education allows students to learn a vast array of incredibly valuable, lifelong skills – about adapting to change, flexible thinking and working across disciplines and being able to collaborate with others; key skills employers look for. With that in mind, Richmond University places a focus on being a teaching intensive institute; our professors continually adapt what they do in order to deliver the best possible education – the hallmark of a liberal arts education in itself.

Even beyond your first year of the core curriculum, you’ll always be pushing and shaping the boundaries of your intellectual capabilities, developing your ability to reason clearly, think rationally and critically, debate, foster skills in problem solving, be creative and communicate clearly and effectively.

While we place a huge emphasis on education and methods, your university experience is so much more than the subject you study; at Richmond University we open open a door to the rest of the world; not just by giving you an international education but also through our international exclusive partnerships. You could benefit from travelling abroad for part of your degree or even take a UK or world internship – experiences which are designed to give you a real taste of studying, living and even working abroad. Become a global citizen; learn alongside professionals in culturally diverse environments, earn academic credits towards graduation – add something truly valuable to your CV and stand out above the competition.

Your story is about the choices you make, the people you meet and the places you go. We all make choices, but at the end of the day it’s our choices that make us.
