Richmond University is the only University to award a U.S. and U.K. three year liberal arts degree, based on the U.S. model, in the world. Through these programmes, students get all of the advantages of a liberal arts education in just three years. The ‘Degree in Three’ will provide a comprehensive collection of courses that will provide students with a cross-disciplinary education. Students will have five classes each semester with one extra elective course in either their second or third year. Students will also still be able to undertake an internship or participate in a study abroad programme as part of this programme. All degrees programmes fulfill the same credit hours and overall requirements of a four-year undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree.
Students will have high contact hours with academics and complete their liberal arts degree in only three years. These advantages combined with generous scholarships are a fantastic return on investment for those who strive to assemble a broad foundation of knowledge in multiple disciplines that can be used in a wide spectrum of careers.
Students pursuing the specialisation in Media Production within the BA degree in Communications will focus on the study of video production, photography, cinema and script writing. This programme will equip the students with industry knowledge of media production from the writing of a script to the implementation of a screen play.
The aim of this programme is to prepare students to work within the technologically driven, globally connected and communication based societies. This degree provides an interdisciplinary, multimedia approach to the study of communications through the study of theory and subsequent practice. During the first two years of the Communications degree students take the same core courses across the three available disciplines. During the third and fourth year students then specialise in Media Production, whilst also having the opportunity to pursue an internship with leading global companies and institutions.

My degree in BA Communications, which I received from Richmond in 2010, prepared me for a career in Journalism. While studying at Richmond, I was able to intern with the Patriot-News and after graduation I received a job offer as a freelancer and ultimately moved into a full time position.
Richmond introduced me to diverse background of people and cultures and broadened my horizons, which is important for every journalist. It honed my writing and encouraged me to explore new things, whether it was creating an online news program or writing a student government’s constitution.
My advice for future journalists is to get an internship and then prove your best skills while interning. Connect with other professionals in your field and expand your network. Constantly work on your portfolio and maintain a blog. Showing that you are aware of trending tech and are social media savvy is incredibly important.
