This year’s joint Richmond and Northampton University’s fourth annual student conference on the Fantastic, focusing on the literature and film worlds of Fantasy, Science Fiction, the Gothic and Utopianism, will be held at the Kensington Campus of Richmond the American International University of London. The conference is organised by Dom Alessio and Jon Mackley who teach and research in this area as part of their Richmond classes on Empire (Cultures of Imperial Power) and British Fantasy Literature.

Students from Richmond will be joined from students and faculty at Northampton, the University of Birmingham and Kent, for a series of papers and discussions highlighting recent scholarship in these genres. The morning session will see some of the UK’s leading researchers in the field, including Farah Mendelsohn, Philippa Semper, Jon Mackley and Meghann Hillier-Broadley, presenting their most recent scholarship. The afternoon session, unique from a UK perspective, sees undergraduate and graduate students from these universities talking about their work. Confirmed speakers from Richmond’s student body include Annabelle Parr, Sophie Dorrell and Heidi Maunder.

This is a very special conference as undergraduate students get to meet their peers from across the country to compare and discuss their interests. It is a great opportunity for them to network with professors and to think about graduate programmes in the area. Of course it is a fantastic experience in itself and adds considerable weight to a CV.
