Orientation Schedule – Spring 2023
Orientation is our opportunity to welcome you to the Richmond community and help make sure that you’re ready to make the most of University life when term begins. During the week we will ask you for details, share with you important information about your time with us, and organise opportunities for you to meet new friends.
Orientation takes place in two phases:
- Before you arrive, we will run a series of webinars to help prepare you for your arrival experience and answer any immediate questions about getting started;
- When you arrive, we will offer you a series of in-person and online sessions between 9th – 13th January to help you get registered and understand how we can help you make the most of Richmond. These will be supported by an online learning module with all the recordings and additional materials.

Orientation Schedule
Spring Orientation will take place from 9th-13th January 2023.
A draft Orientation schedule is now available. Please note, dates/times are subject to change. A final schedule will be published in the week leading up to Orientation. Review the events below and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
Timezones
The events listed below are based on London Time (BST for Fall Orientation and GMT for Spring Orientation), so please make sure you keep that in mind as you plan your day. Find out what time that would be for you.
"All Day" Sessions
Any session listed in the Virtual Schedule as being “all day” instead of at a specific time are not live sessions. Instead, they are learning modules available to you at any point within the Blackboard Orientation course. We have spaced them out over the week within the schedule simply as a suggestion for how you may want to work through them.
Live Sessions
Unless otherwise stated within the calendar, live sessions will take place on the university portal, Blackboard. While we encourage you to attend as many live sessions as possible, we will also endeavour to record as many sessions as we can for students not able to attend during those times, or we provide some alternative information. You will be given access to Blackboard closer to Orientation if you follow the Orientation Step-by-Step Guide.
Mandatory Sessions
There are a number of sessions that are mandatory for you to complete within Virtual Orientation. Most of these sessions are not live, but rather learning modules found on Blackboard (the university portal we are using for Orientation). If you cannot attend any of the mandatory live sessions, recordings of the sessions or other alternatives will be provided.
You can find out if a session is mandatory or not by clicking on the event description within the Virtual Calendar. We will also list out all mandatory sessions within your Blackboard Task List.
Session Categories:
Mandatory: If a session is mandatory then you must attend/watch a recording or complete that task.
Strongly Suggested: We would strongly encourage you to attend, as we really think it is to your benefit. However, it is not required.
Optional: You do not have to attend these sessions, and you may find some topics of these types of sessions may not apply to you (for example a question and answer sessions on visas – this is helpful for some, but not applicable to all students). However, the information is there if you need it.
Virtual Social Events: These are events we have planned to give you an opportunity to meet other new students and current students. They are optional, but we find students really enjoy them and think they are hugely beneficial in terms of transitioning into the Richmond community.
*Visiting Students
Visiting Students are students attending Richmond as part of a short-term exchange or study abroad opportunity for a semester or year. For example, students here as part of a University of Southern California, Tulane University, Southern Methodist University, and any students applying directly for study abroad or exchange would fall under this category.
