Student Finance England (Tuition Loan)

EU students starting university in 2020/21 academic year will have guaranteed home fee status and financial support for the duration of courses in England, the Universities Minister has announced today (28 May).

UK Government loans for higher education study are administered by Student Finance England (SFE). UK and European Union are eligible for loan funding for designated courses (see list below). There are two types of Student Finance England Loans.

  1. Tuition Loans: (UK and EU Students) contribute towards the cost of tuition only
  2. Maintenance Loans (UK National Only) cover living costs such as accommodation, books and bills

The tuition fee loans for English and EU nationals £6,165 per year for tuition fees.  Alternative and private universities like Richmond are not publicly funded. The Government recognizes the academic quality of private not for profit universities but the maximum tuition loan amount for students studying at a private not-for-profit university is £6,165.  This loan amount will not cover the entire undergraduate tuition fee.  Richmond offers scholarships and advice on alternative source of funding that help you to fund your studies.

Student Finance England Maintenance Loan

Maintenance Loans covers living costs such as accommodation, books and bills.  They are released at the start of each term and are paid directly into your bank account. The amount you can borrow is based on the following:

  • If you live with your parents or guardian and start a course in 2017/18 you may receive up to £7,097.
  • If you live outside the parental home and start a course in 2017/18 you may receive up to £11,002.
  • If you are eligible for benefits (lone parents, certain disabled students, student couples with children), and you did not live with your parent/guardian and start a course  in 2017/18 you may receive up to £11,998.
  • All those classified as Home Students (UK) are eligible for a Maintenance loan
  • If you are an EU student who has been living in the UK for five years prior to the start of your course (and can evidence this to Student Finance England’s satisfaction) you may be eligible to apply for the loan.

Employers today look for the right skills rather than the right major.

Your Liberal Arts degree from Richmond University provides you with key transferable skills – written and verbal communication, problem solving, cultural sensitivity, and flexibility to work in a complex and dynamic environment.

Alongside your major you can also choose to study a minor (a smaller specialisation).

This allows you to diversify your degree, specialising in more than one area of study.

Indeed some students elect to ‘double major’, taking two subjects as major specialisms.

You do not have to choose your specialisation at the point of entry.

In the freshman (first) year, students typically study across a variety of subjects, prior to confirming their main area of study (major) later in the programme.
