Freshman in London

The Freshman in London is designed for anyone who is considering a university education in the American liberal arts tradition, but who is not yet ready to commit to enrolling for a full undergraduate programme at Richmond in London, or who already has future plans to study in the United States.

Richmond Foundation Year

Students come to Richmond University from many countries and backgrounds.  Sometimes, students need extra preparation with academic English language, academic orientation, study skills or subject knowledge before they are ready to join our BA programmes. The Richmond Foundation Year is designed to meet these needs.

The great thing about coming to Richmond is that this support continues once students have progressed to our BA, with students able to take further courses in academic English, writing and research.

The Richmond Foundation Year
Motivated students from whatever background who do not yet reach our required entry standards for High School Diploma, A levels or international qualifications.  For students requiring additional academic English language support will study for 3 semesters (of which the first semster will be on the EAP programme.)

This is a one-year programme spread over 3 semesters (Fall, Spring and Summer ) and is designed to help you prepare for entry onto a Richmond BA programme.


Course Structure

This is a one-year programme spread over 3 semesters (Fall, Spring and Summer ) and is designed to help you prepare for entry onto a Richmond BA programme.
With guidance from their personal Academic Advisor, students will typically take courses from among the following:

  • English for Academic Purposes
  • Principles of Academic Writing
  • Foundations of Academic Research
  • Fundamentals of Mathematics

PLUS courses from the Liberal Arts core curriculum selected from the students intended undergraduate degree


Admissions Requirements:

On individual application, in general well-motivated students who have studied for High School Diploma, A levels, IB or international equivalents but who have not achieved the required grades for immediate entry to the Richmond BA programme. English language requirement:

Students not from majority English-speaking countries must have a minimum of IELTS 5.0 in each element (or equivalent) on entry. Applicants with an IELTS of below 5.5 in each element will usually need to spend their first semester on our English for Academic Purposes Programme (EAP) to enhance their academic language and skills.

Note that this programme is designed for students from all countries however, the Richmond Foundation programme is not suitable for students requiring financial assistance from US Federal Aid or Student Finance England (until they progress to the BA).
