Computer Lab Code of Conduct

  1. Each user is responsible for ensuring that his or her use of the computing facility does nor interfere with other users or the proper functioning of the system.

  2. Frivolous, disturbing, or otherwise inconsiderate conduct including use of computers for playing games, sending nuisance or obscene messages and wasteful use of the facilities for making signs, posters or calendars on the printers is not permitted.

  3. Users are not permitted to smoke, eat or drink or use mobile phones in the computer areas. The on-duty lab supervisor will enforce these rules.

  4. If any user is unsure about how the system works or has any problems with the software packages, ask the on-duty Lab Supervisor.

  5. Students must not circumvent the system for activating the virus checking procedures on the computers and must follow the actions requested by the anti-virus software or a member of IT staff on the detection of a virus.

  6. The University does not provide support or assistance in the use of computers owned by students. It is not permitted for students to connect such computers to the University’s network or printers in the computer labs unless authorised as part of an official connection programme.

  7. The installation and/or playing of computer games on either the network or any of the computer’s hard disk is prohibited.

  8. Users must logout from the network in the normal way before switching off the computer.

  9. Users must be considerate to others using the lab. Please tidy any mess before you leave.

  10. Users should not reserve PCs by leaving their belongings in the vicinity while taking a break, having lunch etc. Any PC abandoned for more than 10 minutes will be given to another user.

  11. For the efficient utilisation of fileserver space, students must manage their fileserver space, deleting unwanted files, multiple copies of files etc & ensure that space usage remains within their quota allocation.

  12. For the efficient utilisation of the email system, students must manage their mailboxes, deleting unwanted messages, periodically deleting old records of sent messages etc.

  13. In all Computer Laboratories in the event of demand exceeding the availability of resources, priority is always given to those who are using the facilities for the completion of course work associated with their University academic studies. This will be strictly enforced by the on-duty Lab Supervisor.

  14. When working in the Computer Laboratories all users should take due care and attention when using the equipment and report faults promptly.
