Terms of Reference
• Wireless support is provided by the RU Wireless Helpdesk Team. Hours of operation are 5-10pm, Sunday-Thursday. The Richmond Hill Helpdesk is based at the Housing Office located in the Main Building and the Kensington campus Helpdesk is based in the Atlantic House Open Access Area IT office.
• Since users will be using their own equipment, there is a limit to the extent of support that staff can provide. Assistance is offered in an advisory capacity only. Staff can not assume the liability of physically working on your personal computer.
• You will need to install all software and hardware yourself. Laptops, wireless cards or peripherals cannot be left with at the Wireless Helpdesk or individual IT staff for installation.
• Assistance will be provided on an appointment basis, but walk-in assistance will be provided when staff are free of appointments. Please be patient if you have to wait for an appointment during regular Helpdesk hours or for your problem to be solved; the student computer labs are available for alternate computer access.
• The Team can only advise on the installation of wireless cards that they have configured before. If you have purchased another brand of card or have a computer that is not running Windows or Mac software, we are unable to provide advice on its installation.
• We will only support the network connection on your laptop. This includes advice on your wireless card, webmail and Internet connection.
Please inform yourself about the policies regarding network use.
- The Richmond University Network regulations
- Laws and Acts on Network Use
- Computer Misuse Act 1990 - computer misuse offences (A summary)
Richmond Wireless Network users must read, understand and agree to Richmond University's Code of Computing Practices.
Please read the terms fully before showing your acceptance of them by clicking on the I agree link below. If you do not agree please exit.
It is your responsibility to maintain a secure computer on the University network. You can do this by maintaining and maintaining an up-to-date subscription to a recognised anti-virus and firewall software package, by keeping your operating system up-to-date and by ensuring that you and any other user of your computer do not introduce viruses, phishing or other problems onto the network.
While we work with students to maintain their connection to the Internet, if your computer is deemed a threat to the network, it will be removed until the threat has been remedied.
Richmond's Network Regulations apply to the Richmond Wireless program; wireless users should ensure that they have read, understand and agree to these regulations. Richmond Wireless users must use a computer that complies with these minimum specifications; The wireless team can only provide support on operating systems which the university uses as an institution and wireless cards (link to page) that the IT Department have already tested.
The University will not be held responsible for any damage or loss resulting from use of the wireless network.
Because these are your own personal computers, the Wireless Team will not be responsible for the operation of the user's computer or any part thereof.
Bandwidth provided to Richmond Wireless users may be limited, especially during peak usage. Excessive bandwidth use, such as downloading large audio or video files, by an individual will result in a warning and may be grounds for a forced reduction in bandwidth for the individual or even termination of service. Wireless users agree that their bandwidth usage may be monitored.
The use of routers, hubs, switches, repeaters, concentrators or other devices that interfere with network traffic is forbidden to be connected to Richmond Wireless.
Richmond Wireless users are responsible for their network "packets" and the contents thereof travelling across the wireless network.
Richmond Wireless Network users are responsible for maintaining updated virus protection and security patches on their computer. Computers that are deemed a threat to the Richmond network will be disconnected from Richmond Wireless at the discretion of the University.
Wireless users should be aware that they are using a personal computer and thus should undertake measures to protect the security and integrity of their data.
Any facility, including hardware and software, whether provided by the University or by the user, is used entirely at the risk of the user. The University will not be liable for any loss, damage or inconvenience arising directly or indirectly from the use of any IT facility at the University.
The University limits its responsibility to the connection between the Wireless LAN Adapter and the Wireless Access Points and will undertake measures to protect the security and integrity of data. It is the responsibility of users to make appropriate arrangements for the security of their own data wherever it is stored.
I agree with the above Terms of Use.
