Getting started

To use the Richmonds wireless network you will first have to register yourself and your laptop. You do this online shown in the URL below. On these pages are our tems and conditions for using the network and instructions in how to complete the registration form.

Please allow up to 24 hours the the registration to be processed.

Hardware requirements

You will need a Laptop running Windows Vista 32bit /64bit. The laptop will need a Wireless network card which complies with the Wi-Fi (IEEE 8.02.11 b/g) standard for wireless networks operating in the 2.4 GHz spectrum with a bandwidth of 11/54 Mbps (megabits per second). This is the most prevalent wireless standard so if your laptop has buildt-in wireless, it is likely to be compliant.

Quick start for Windows Vista

To start you will need to open your Control Panel and choose Network and Sharing Center.

Select from the left hand menu show in Fig. 1.1, Manage wireless networks.

When the window opens click on the Add button and choose Manually create a network profile.

This will prompt a window to open asking you to identify the network and the type of network you are connecting to.

Network name: ruairnet

Security type: WPA2-Enterprise

Encryption type: TKIP

When you have completed filling in the blanks click on the next button.

It should say now that you have Successfully added ruairnet.

Now you have to click on Change connection settings shown in Fig. 1.4.

When the window opens there will be two tabs at the top, click on the one labelled Security.

Un-tick the box labelled Cache use information for subsequent connections to this network.

Then click on Settings...

When you are in the settings window un-tick the box labelled Validate server certificate. Now click on the Configure... button and un-tick Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any). Shown in Fig.1.6.

Now all you will need to do is close the windows and wait a few moments for your laptop to connect to the wireless network. Once connected a bubble window will appear on the bottom right hand side of your screen.

Once it appears, just click on it to log in.

Username: Student ID

Password: Richmond network login password

Logon domain: RAIUL

If you have registered correctly you should get a message that will appear in the bottom left of your screen, informing you that you are connected to the wireless network.

If you have problems connecting to the wireless network please go and see a RCC within their opening times or you can email resnet@richmond.ac.uk
