On Monday 9th February, Neil Mackie’s Comparative Monarchies history class (HST373) went to the Wallace Collection near Bond Street to immerse themselves in the splendour that was Ancien Régime France. Led by an expert guide from the Collection, the lifestyles of the Sun King (Louis XIV) and Madame de Pompadour (the official mistress of Louis XV) were examined in depth. The tour relates to a theme of the course “theatres of power”: how monarchies project themselves through the display of ritual and artefacts. So much time was spent in 18th century France that no time was left to explore the Collection’s excellent displays of armour and weapons.
