Visit to the Estorick Gallery of Modern Italian Art
by Carly Beckerman
On February 7th, Dr. Alessio organised a visit to the Estorick Gallery of Modern Italian Art for his History of Fascisms class The Rise of the Right. The prime objective was to view an exhibition of Futurist pieces and hear a guest lecture by assistant curator Chris Adams on connections between the Futurist movement and Mussolini’s Fascist ideology. Displaying an extensive knowledge of the history of Italian Futurists, he showed their ties to other European modern artists of the period, and treated us to a very necessary explanation of the often abstract images.
Despite creating a slight confusion, the artwork itself is dazzling. This is especially true considering the Futurist’s glorification of technology, an alien concept to someone raised in a period when art is often the antithesis to industrialization. As well as housing vibrant paintings, the gallery is also host to many sketches and a few sculptures which a layperson can only describe as definitely worth a look.
On behalf of those in attendance, I would like to thank Assistant Curator Chris Adams for his enjoyable and informative lecture and recommend the Estorick Gallery for anyone interested in modern art.
