A Pocket History of the University Scarf

The UK college scarf dates back to 1938 when Almonds of Cambridge supplied knitted scarves to the universities. At that time, wool was in short supply due to the Second World War and an alternative material needed to be found. University scarf makers came up with the idea of using woven material, cut into strips and the trend for stripy, university scarves was born!

After the war, although knitted scarves were once again available, most universities opted to remain with the new cloth arrangement. As the trend progressed, scarves which had been traditionally produced for the Oxford and Cambridge Universities and boat clubs, soon became popular with all universities.

Nowadays, university scarves are a symbol of community and prestige and are popular as gifts for friends and family, as keepsakes for students and as leaving mementos for academic staff and alumni.
