Trip to Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, MA Art History and Visual Culture

24/09/2011

The Natural History Museum, Oxford, which includes the Pitt Rivers Museum

Lizann Tapper, Ashton Chandler and Cortney Thorn presenting in the museum space

Richmond's MA Art History and Visual Culture students visited the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford on Wed 21 Sep. The PRM, part of the University of Oxford, is well-known for its fantastic collection of ethnographic objects and distinctive displays which are often stereotyped as 'Victorian cabinets of curiosities'. The visit was part of Dr Wallis' 'World Arts' course in which students engage critically with the representation and interpretation of indigenous and prehistoric art. Three students (Ashton Chandler, Lizann Tapper and Cortney Thorn) presented in the museum space, questioning the culture of collecting, colonial discourse and strategies of display.
