Richmond History Professor Publishes New Work on Tourism
Dom Alessio, Director of the Study Abroad Program and Professor of History at Richmond, has published a new article on tourism for the Routledge journal Studies in Travel Writing. The piece is entitled “Tourism and Travel: Imagining New Zealand’s Cities and Towns at the Turn of the 20th Century” (14, 4, December 2010, 383-396). Dom has done considerable work in Pacific and New Zealand history and literature. This piece re-examines the way that tourism has been studied in New Zealand. It suggests that despite New Zealand’s well-known rural imagery, cities and towns were the real focus of early promotional endeavors. It also suggests that booster sources should be considered an important sub-genre of travel writing since they are targeted directly at voyagers.
