Summer I Orientation

10/05/2006

Welcome New Students

Move in day begins Sunday 14 May, 2006.
The Orientation program begins Monday 15 May at 9am.

Student success begins with Orientation. Orientation is a period before classes begin that will help you prepare for your academic career in Richmond. Major research indicates that the academic performance of students who complete Orientation is better than those who do not.

During Orientation you will engage in a number of activities that will help you learn about the academic program, register for classes, and get your email account set up.

Placement Tests
Orientation also includes an important placement exam in both maths and English; however, these “tests” are not really tests as you normally might think (don’t be nervous!). Rather, the placement tests are done to evaluate at which level of maths and English you should be placed. In this way, they are better thought of as an “assessment.” The Faculty does not want you to be placed in a level too below or above your abilities. You may be eligible for exemption from these exams based on your previous grades or exam results. A list of exempt students will be posted at Orientation.

Advising and Registration
During Orientation you will meet with an academic adviser. An academic adviser is a faculty member who will assist you with selecting classes for the semester.

Research indicates that students who have a good orientation experience are more likely to have better grades and persist towards graduation. Orientation is a very important time for every student, so make sure you arrive on time and ready to get involved!
