Students Travel to Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford

10/02/2010

Assistant Professor, Dr. Judith Carmel-Arthur, organized a trip to Oxford for her English 215 Principles of Academic Research classes which commenced this past Sunday. The students travelled by train to tour the Pitt Rivers Museum which holds one of the world's greatest collections. Here is what the students had to say afterwards...

The trip to Pitt Rivers was awesome as a whole. The museum itself was fascinating in every singe aspect. The collections that were shown, apparently carefully chosen and flawlessly displayed, make a nice show not only to those interested in history but even to those who are not. Not only does the display show futures of exponential beauty but they also tell the story of what used to be. Tells the viewer learning, nevertheless interesting, experience. I really enjoyed myself and hope to be able to go see the museum again!

The Pitt Rivers Museum was an educational trip which specifically dealt with our first essay project, 'Heritage'. I must say it was an excellent idea to help us understand the concept of 'heritage' through not only words but to implement it through experience.
This was a very fun day and the trip was enjoyed by all of my companions who went together after to see the natural history museum and the city.

Thank you Professor!

Sincerely, Badirkhan

I really enjoyed the Pitt Rivers Museum. I found that there were very interesting pieces being displayed. I was most impressed by the Dodo Bird exhibit. I was pleased to see this as I am half Mauritian and am farmiliar with the history of Mauritiu's heritage. I also really enjoyed viewing all of the jewellery being displayed.

The Pitt Rivers trip was the best way to experience heritage short of visiting the different countries themselves. There was a lot of information and seeing things first-hand made some of the strange concepts easier to grasp. It was a great experience and I learned a lot.

I like the Pitt Rivers Museum becuase it has so many things from different cultures all around the world and from different periods of time. All of the objects helped me to learn the cultural heritage of various cultures.

The Pitt Rivers Museum had so many things and aspects about different cultures and even past civilizations, that one would need at least a couple of days to have a closer look at everything.

The Natural History Museum was also very interesting because it had a meteorite which was about 4.5 billion years old. That means it must have hit the earth while it was still forming.

The Pitt Rivers Museum is an excellent balance between the past and the present. It is extraordinary and all should see this timeless establishment.
