Student Yameen Shahid Delivers Speech at the House of Commons

On Tuesday 2 November 2010 current student Yameen Shahid delivered a speech about the 'Maldives', his native country at the House of Commons. Shahid's speech, which was was part of a panel discussion titled "An Emerging Democracy," discussed how the Maldives has most recently become a democratic country after undergoing 30 years of dictatorship. The Richmond student also emphasized how the Maldives does not have any institutions of higher learning causing many to leave the country in order to seek a university-level education. The speech focused on the youth and how strong direction is desperately needed as a lack of extracurricular programs and activities often lead to poor choices such as turning towards a life of drugs and petty crimes.
The panel was attended by David Anderson MP, and speakers included High Commissioner Dr. Faizal, David Amess MP, Chair of UK-Maldives All Party Parliamentary Group, Rita Payne, Chair of Commonwealth Journalists Association, Mark Seddon, journalist, and Mushtaq Lasharie, Chair of Third World Solidarity.
