A Pocket History of the University Scarf
The UK college scarf dates back to 1938 when Almonds of Cambridge supplied knitted scarves to the universities. With wool in short supply due to the war, an alternative material needed to be found. Almonds decided to use woven material, cut into strips and so the trend for stripy, university scarves was born!

Nowadays, university scarves are a symbol of community and prestige and are popular as gifts for friends and family, as keepsakes for students and as leaving mementoes for academic staff and alumni.
