Richmond Spring Break Egypt 2009, 15 March

This Spring Break 19 Richmond Study Abroad and Degree students returned to Egypt for an 8 day cruise and train journey up and down the Nile. The trip began in Luxor visiting the Valley of the Kings and Queens and with visits to some of the tombs accessible to the public, including the legendary King Tut. Then they left the Middle and early New Kingdom behind to sail down the Nile to see the beautifully preserved temples of the Greek Ptolemaic pharaohs - the predecessors of the famous Cleopatra.
After 2 days of sailing the boat reached the First Cataract and the city of Aswan. Visits here included Abu Simbel, the quarry where all the country's great granite monuments came from, and as camel ride across the desert to visit a Nubian village and family. Then it was overnight train to Cairo to see the Pyramids (at Giza and at Saqqara), as well as a visit to the world famous Cairo Museum. Highlights here included Tutt's funerary relics as well as the Narmer palette.
The trip ended with a return journey to Luxor and a visit to Luxor Temple to see the monumental temple created by Ramses.
