Richmond’s First Annual Pedagogies Conference
25/03/2010
On Friday 19 March, Chair of Faculty, Sara Chetin, with the assistance of Richmond faculty Mike Keating, Julia Jeannet and Nick Wilkinson, organized a very successful conference on the subject of "Pedagogies at Richmond".
The conference, which was attended by many Richmond faculty, the Provost and an Academic Governor, made visible the research, thought and creative energy that faculty invest in their pedagogical approaches. Sara says that some of the most interesting discussions she has had with her faculty colleagues revolve around how they engage their students and the problems and rewards associated with this. Several faculty, from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, presented fascinating papers that addressed specific student centered issues such as the use of technology, reading and interactive approaches, and seminar teaching at the MA level. Some faculty shared specific practices such as a Trade Game in a general education Economics class, Policy Briefs in IR/Politics and Poster Presentations in Psychology courses. The discussion was very lively and engaging, and reflected how teaching at Richmond is highly valued. Sara thinks Richmond is lucky to have some excellent teachers and looks forward to next year's conference where further issues and strategies can be shared.
Special thanks to Sara Chetin and all the presenters: George Berguno, James Boys, James Earl, Julia Hathaway, Michael Keating, Ira Konstantinou, Shuna Neilson, Sabine Spangenberg, Tania Woloshyn and Christine Zaher.
