Richmond Professor Co-Writes New 3D Motion Picture
31/03/2010

John Chua, an Associate Professor of Communications at Richmond University, attended the premiere in Moscow of the new animated family movie Star Dogs: Belka and Stelka, which he co-wrote. Three years in the making, the film premiered on March 10, 2010 at a special VIP screening attended by celebrities and the media at October Cinema, one of Moscow’s best-known theaters. The 3D movie opened on March 18 at over 650 cinemas across Russia and the countries of the former Soviet Union and is expected to be available in English later this year.
Receiving many positive reviews in the Russian media, news of the premiere also appeared in publications around the world. In London, the Independent and The Daily Telegraph published articles about it.
While in Moscow, Professor Chua also took an opportunity to guest lecture at two institutions. He presented ‘The Long and Short History of Russian-American Cooperation in Film Production’ for the American Center located at the All-Russia State Library of Foreign Literatures on March 9. Beginning with Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbank’s Moscow visit in 1926 to Timur Bekmambetov’s recent hits in Hollywood, there have been a string of cross-cultural exchanges and cooperation between these two countries. Although much of this history has been forgotten, Professor Chua wanted to highlight many results of these cultural exchanges, particularly those between private citizens.
On March 11, he presented a talk at Moscow State University, Russia’s most celebrated university, lecturing on the role of citizen (or civic) journalism in Iraq today. He spoke specifically about how bloggers (video, photo and text) can potentially help transform and benefit a country in turmoil. Prior to coming to Richmond, Professor Chua taught at the journalism school of Moscow State University.
At both lectures, he also spoke briefly about Richmond University and answered queries audience members had about Richmond.
