Borough's Olympic logo unveiled

Richmond Olympic Logo 2012

New, official 2012 Olympics pin badges will soon be available for all Borough residents to show their support for the London Olympics, after the Chairman, Lord Coe, presented the first badge to council leader, Serge Lourie.

The design of the Richmond upon Thames ‘Landmark London’ badge was revealed on Tuesday. The badge shows a stylised image of Richmond Park with two deer heads in the centre, with the 2012 logo and the Borough’s name.

Councillor Lourie said: “The Olympics is the most important sporting event, which everybody living and working in our Borough should feel a part of. The Borough is an easy train ride away from Stratford and I hope as many of our residents as possible will be able to see some of the sporting events".

“I am very pleased the park was chosen from our many world class attractions to represent the Borough as our symbol for the Games. The pin badges are a small but very public way people can show their support for our athletes. We are also delighted that the South African Olympic team has agreed to be based at St Mary’s College and the Lensbury Club”.

Lord Coe, Chairman of the organising committee, said: “Richmond Park, chosen by the residents of Richmond upon Thames, is a real iconic landmark and celebrates what a unique city London is. I am delighted to see how proud residents of Richmond upon Thames are of their Borough and I hope they will wear their pin badges with pride”.

Richmond Park is London’s largest park, with 2,500 acres of hills, woodlands, gardens and grassland, and stunning views as far as Canary Wharf.

The badges will be available from early April from the Richmond Visitor Information Centre in Whittaker Avenue, Richmond.

Councillor Merrick Cockell, Chairman of London Councils, said: “With the Winter Games over, the spotlight has truly turned on London. We are delighted to have worked so closely on a project that really demonstrates how important London 2012 will be for the whole capital. We cannot wait to show off our city and these badges will be a wonderful introduction to some of the many delights London has to offer.”
