Richmond MUN Successful at Nottingham Conference

15/11/2011

Patricia and Zoe, DISEC Committee

The recent trip to the Nottingham Model United Nations conference was a great success. The overarching theme of the conference was the continent of Africa which was particularly topical as Africa is currently undergoing immense change. Camila Studart, Patricia Schouker, Laila Dib, Rebecca Blank, Jagoda Migdal and myself represented the Richmond delegation.

We represented delegates from Egypt, Tunisia and Zimbabwe and sat on the Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC), the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) and the African Union Crisis committee. We debated topics such as the issue of arms exports by developed nations to fuel fighting countries with changing regimes, empowering women and children through education, AIDS and sexual culture in Africa, as well as the African Union peace keeping missions in Somalia.

The Richmond delegation performed extremely well. Not only did every delegate contribute to successful resolutions that were passed in each committee, but Camila Studart received an honourable delegate award in SOCHUM. I am very proud of how every Richmond delegate performed and we are looking forward to our next conference: LIMUN – the biggest conference held in Europe.
