Richmond Literature Festival 2011

During the Richmond Literature Festival, Richmond hosted 3 events, this is the fifth year of involvement.

David Boyd Haycock spoke about his recent book ‘A Crisis of Brilliance’, he outlined the stories of five British artists during the First World War. David also introduced his new work in progress about artists and writers involved in the Spanish Civil War .

Anne Sebba spoke about the life of Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor - ‘That woman’. She expanded on the programme she made for Channel 4 earlier this year, and revealed more private letters from Wallis to which she has confidential access.

Sandy Nairne – director of the National Portrait Gallery – spoke about art theft. He was a director at the Tate when two works by J.M.W. Turner were stolen in 1994, he detailed the pursuit, negotiation and the return of the paintings.

This was a fascinating series of talks, all very well received by capacity audiences in the Lecture Theatre at the Hill. Over the three events members of staff and faculty were joined by nearly 300 interested members of the local community who were also keen to see the University and find out more about its activities.
