Richmond International Action Network - Project: York, Sierra Leone
23/03/2011

Who We Are
Richmond International Action Network (R.I.A.N) was formed in the latter part of 2010 as an initiative for local economic development in developing nations. Structured around the passion of undergraduate students, the organization’s mission is to provide opportunities for students to do field work studies in developing countries while working towards the completion of the Millennium
Development Goals.
Where we are working: York, Sierra Leone
R.I.A.N’s initial project will be in support of an alumnus, Olu Tejan Cole, who returned to his country of birth to help rebuild it following a disastrous war. While attending Richmond, Olu participated in Richmond’s Career Apprenticeship and International Field Study Programme in Sierra Leone. While there, Olu worked alongside Ed Bentham, founder of the Atlantic Whale Foundation of which Olu later became a trustee. Ed Bentham was formerly a Business and Economics professor at Richmond University and so it follows that R.I.A.N is a product of the university’s continued relationship with Richmond alumnus Olu Tejan Cole and former Richmond faculty, Ed Bentham.
Projects:
In the one month that we are there, we will implement four projects: improving animal husbandry, replanting the Upper Guinea Lowland Forest, installing solar panels in streets and homes, and rebuilding and constructing the Community Center for music and art.
