Richmond Hosts Fantasy Symposium this Friday
23/11/2011

Date: Friday, 25th November 2011
Time: 0930 to 1630
Venue: Asa Briggs 216, Kensington Campus
Richmond is hosting a one-day symposium examining Gothic, Fantasy, and Science Fiction Literature and Film. The symposium is entitled “The Fantastic Imagination” and is being held jointly with the University of Northampton. Undergraduate and graduate students from both institutions will be presenting, as well as faculty.
Opening the symposium will be a special plenary lecture by Dr. Andrew Butler of Canterbury Christ Church College. It is entitled “Misrepresenting Fantasy”. Richmond Adjunct Faculty lecturer Matt Sangster will be giving a paper about monsters, entitled “Human, All Too Human”. Three Study Abroad students from Richmond’s new LIT 491 class, British Fantasy Literature (Lise Dunning, Victoria Peralta and Maria Badillo), will be presenting. The conference is being co-organised by Matt and Dom Alessio, Professor of History and Director of the Study Abroad Program. Dom will be chairing and speaking at the concluding roundtable discussion.
The conference is a great opportunity for Richmond students to network with students and faculty from other universities and to gain experience presenting professionally. The organisers hope that this session will act as a opportunity for Richmond students to explore possible graduate study opportunities here in the UK.
