Current student, CJ Redfern, recently asked Richmond's Alumni Relations Office to provide him with a member of alumni to serve as a mentor as he prepares for graduation in December. Given his interests and goals, Redfern was linked with Daniel Wagner, Class of 1983, who owns Country Risk Solutions (www.countryrisksolutions.com).

Redfern and Wagner recently co-wrote an article entitled, Water Scarcity and Foreign Direct Investment in MENA, that was published by The Institute of Near East and Gulf Military Analysis. This article addresses how water scarcity is a source of conflict in the Middle East and North Africa region, and how profits from foreign direct investment may serve to reduce some of the underlying hostility surrounding the issue. The article explores how the profits generated from foreign direct investments could potentially be used to address the water scarcity and associated in the region. If multinational corporations can be encouraged to invest more in MENA economies, resulting profits could be put towards investment in more fresh water production, such as desalinization plants. In turn, if more fresh water were available to the MENA countries, this would presumably lessen tension in the region and help contribute towards peace in the Middle East. The article finishes by suggesting policies to create a fund to improve water infrastructures in the region.

Redfern now interns with Wagner and will continue to do so this Fall.
