Professor Berguno Republishes Tale of Espionage
18/10/2011
In the spring semester of 2007, Richmond University granted Professor George Berguno an academic sabbatical so that he could pursue his research projects abroad. That summer he visited Saint Petersburg University. Then, later that year, he participated in research events held at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna.
It was during his stay in Vienna that Professor Berguno conceived Colonel Redl’s Knife Sheath, a spy story set in 1913. This story required considerable historical research: the names and dates and major events reported are authentic. The protagonist of this story, Detective Sergeant Ebinger, is based on the intelligence officer of that name who did indeed uncover that the Austrian officer Colonel Alfred Redl was in the employ of Russian Intelligence.
Professor Berguno’s spy story was originally published in his first collection of short stories, The Sons of Ishmael. The book was originally printed by Ex Occidente Press in 2010, but is currently sold out. However, Lacuna Magazine, an e-journal for historical fiction and alternate history, has republished Colonel Redl’s Knife Sheath in their latest issue (October 2011).
