President John Annette speaks at Berlin conference

Professor John Annette recently delivered a keynote address on ‘Democratic Citizenship and Volunteering' at the CEV symposium 'Volunteering and Active Citizenship: Two Sides of the Same Coin?' which was held in Berlin on 19-21 October 2011.

Addressing issues of volunteering and active citizenship, the main objectives of the Symposium were to:-

a) Enhance the connection between volunteering and active citizenship;

b) Create a space for debate based upon specific projects implemented at local levels by comparing and contrasting similar projects across Europe;

c) Identify efficient methods of empowering citizens to be active through volunteering.

The conference was attended by a large number of Heads of national volunteer centres in Europe, leaders of major European volunteer organisations and representatives of the European Commission as well as Members of the European Parliament.
