President Hackforth-Jones Hosts James Ragan Poetry Reading

Richmond students at reading
On Monday evening, 29 October, President Jos Hackforth-Jones was delighted to host a poetry reading in Orchard House. Internationally recognized poet James Ragan read a selection of his poetry to an enthralled group of creative writing students and other guests. In addition, Anna Manussis, who teaches creative writing at Richmond, read from a selection of student work. We were also delighted to welcome Catherine Davidson, a distinguished writer and former member of Richmond faculty.
James, who had just returned from a month-long tour, has recently retired as the director of the graduate writing program at the University of Southern California. He has read his verse for five heads of state, including Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and Czech President Vaclav Havel. Most recently, he has been a featured reader at Carnegie Hall in New York and before at the United Nations. He has presented his work around the world. Among his volumes of poetry are In the Talking Hours, Womb-Weary, The Hunger Wall, Lusions and Too Long a Solitude. He is the co-editor of the collected poems of Yevgeny Yevtushenko. James is a professional author, who has has also written for both television, stage and film including the Academic Award-winning The Deerhunter
