The Rough Guide to Orientation Fall 2006
Richmond Hill Campus - Degree Students
Tuesday 29 August – Saturday 2 September
The following is only a rough guide to the New Student Orientation for degree studnets. This is subject to change. Times and location for each session to be confirmed. You will receive a detailed schedule when you arrive.
Orientation activities begin on Tuesday 29 August from 8am with residential move in and Orientation check in. We have numerous activities and sessions scheduled throughout the day for you. Along with residential students moving in, students living off campus are encouraged to fully to participate in these activities. They include getting your email account set up, learning about the resources in the Library, and tours into Richmond town. There also may be many things you will want to complete on the first day. Orientation check in will continue on Wednesday 30 August from 8am to 10am in the same location. Thereafter it will be re-located to individual offices.

Tuesday 29 August
Residential Move-In
8am-5pm
All new students living on campus can move in today. You will receive your student ID card and Orientation materials. Off campus students are welcome to come today to collect Orientation material.
Orientation Check-in
8am-5pm
This is where you go to collect your Orientation materials.
Shopping Trips to Richmond
Throughout the day
Trips into Richmond will be organized to show you around and help you get things you need for your room and other necessities, such as a cell phone, alarm clock, etc.
IT and Library Orientation
Throughout the day
In this session you will learn about the University’s Information Technology and Library resources. All students must attend this session to gain access to the University's computing network and Library.
Residence Life Meeting
7pm
This meeting is for you to get to know the people living on campus and in your specific residential area.
Wednesday 30 August
Orientation Check-in
8am-5pm
If you did not collect your Orientation materials the day before, this is where you start. At check-in we will confirm your arrival and give you materials you will need for Orientation. We HIGHLY recommend you arrive in the morning (before 10am) so that you can settle in and participate in the meetings and workshops below.
Orientation Overview
10am
In this meeting we will introduce you to members of staff here to assist you with Orientation. We will review the Orientation schedule, explain the purpose of Orientation, go over the Orientation materials, and highlight the sessions within Orientation. You will also learn about the purpose of your being at university, your expectations of Richmond, and the expectations of you at the beginning of your social and academic journey as a student.

Group Meeting
When you arrive you will be assigned a group leader who will meet with you to discuss the Orientation schedule and introduce you to other students. He or she is your leader for the week and is there to help you get through Orientation and answer any questions you have. Take advantage of your group leader! Ask questions!
The Guide to Academic Advising and Registration
This session will explain to you the academic advising system and help you understand the curriculum.
English Placement Exam
All new students, including transfer students, must sit this test unless they are exempt. This exam evaluates your level of English and helps to place you in the right class.
Dinner with the Faculty
All new students are invited to this dinner where you will initially meet and mingle with the full-time Faculty.
Evening Activity: Walking Tour of Richmond
If you haven’t been to Richmond before, this tour will show you the amenities our town has to offer. Orientation Leaders will take you to places like the train station and post office, in addition to their favorite hang out spots!
Thursday 31 August
Math Placement Test
All new students, including transfer students, must sit this test unless they are exempt. This exam evaluates your level of math and helps to place you in the right class.
National Health Service Registration
In order to receive free health care under the National Health Service, you must register with a doctor’s office. You will also be able to get a meningitis and MMR shot if you have not already gotten them.
IT and Library Orientation
In this session you will learn about the University’s Information Technology and Library resources. All students must attend this session to gain access to the University's computing network and Library.
Transfer Students Question & Answer
If you are a transfer student, you will have the opportunity to speak with the Dean of Academic Affairs about transfer credit policies.
Modern Language Testing
This is for those of you who wish to take a high-level language class or be exempt from the language requirement.
Living, Studying, and Working in the UK
This session will cover a broad range of topics to keep you up-to-date with issues of living, studying and working in the UK such as extending your student visa, travelling to other countries, working in the UK, and more.
Evening Activity: The Great British Quiz Night
There’s nothing more British than a quiz night and everyone wins something for participating! Questions are general knowledge, history, music, geography, and sports.
Friday 1 September
Getting Help with Registration
In this session you will meet with faculty and other students in your major to help you select classes and discuss course requirements, the general education program, and how you can meet the needs of both.
Academic Advising and Registration
After you have decided which classes you want to take for the semester, you will meet with your faculty advisor who will help register you for class.
Being Safe
Whether you are from a big city or a small village, you can never be too safe.
Meeting for Off-Campus Students
Students who are living off campus are encouraged to come to this session to learn about your rights and obligations as a tenant.
Fitness Centre Inductions
Anyone who would like to use the University Fitness Centre must complete an induction. There is a one-off £5 charge for the induction and then you are a member for the entire time you are a student at Richmond.
Evening Activity: An Evening in Central London
There’s a lot to see and do in central London on a Friday night. Orientation Leaders will take you into London where the choice of entertainment is yours. Transportation is provided to and from London.
Saturday 2 September
Walking Tour of Kensington
Kensington is your second campus so take advantage of it. You will learn where classes, offices and resources are located. Plus High Street Kensington is full of shops and services.
Shopping Trip to Kingston
Get essentials that you need for starting classes and decorating your new living area. Kingston is a short bus ride away and a popular place for students to go on the evening and weekends.
Evening Activity: Boat Party in Central London
Celebrate the end of Orientation aboard the London Regalia, a barge boat permanently moored on the Thames next to London Bridge. It’s a perfect way to end a busy week! Transport is provided to and from the boat.
