Maori Visitors to History 319 class Cultures of Imperial Power

This week two Maori guest lecturers, Jordan and Jerome, talked to Dr. Alessio's (Dom's) class about the history of Maori and Pakeha (European) contact in New Zealand and the Pacific. Jordan, a language lecturer, talked about Maori protocol and culture and the ways in which Maori peoples responded in the past to colonisation from Europe. Jerome talked about the current Maori Renaissance and attempts to re-invigorate their culture; he did so playing various traditional Pacific musical insturuments which he had made and been taught by his ancestors. The Maori guest lectures are run every year as a result of Dom's contacts with the Centre for New Zealand Studies. Students interested in New Zealand and Pacific culture are also able to do internships at the Centre every semester. For more information please contact Dom at: Dr. Dominic Alessio
